Waiting for God’s Promises

Waiting on God

And, being assembled together with them, commanded them that they should not depart from Jerusalem, but wait for the promise of the Father, which, saith he, ye have heard of me – Acts 1:4

The disciples had followed Jesus for three and a half years. They have listen to his teachings: he taught them how to pray, he taught on giving, he taught them kingdom relevance and he taught them on relationship. He taught them about Christian living, he taught them on equality, he taught them on soul winning and discipleship.

He taught them on stewardship, he taught them on faithfulness, he taught them on regeneration and baptism, he taught them about Holy Spirit, he taught them on marriage, he taught them on sacrificial living, he taught them on love, he taught them on sowing and reaping, he taught them on supernatural supply.

He taught them on service, he taught them on submission and humility, he taught them about Satan, demons, and evil powers, he taught them all they need to know about God.

He took them through series of encounters:

They had encounter with His healing power as He healed many sicknesses and diseases. They had encounter with His miraculous power as He turned water to wine. They had encounter with His resurrection power as He raised Lazarus and other people from dead.

They had encounter with His supernatural power as He walked on water and calm the storm and feed and also fed five thousand people with five loaves of bread and two fishes. They had encounter with His power of provision as He brought out money from the mouth of the fish.

They had encounter with His deliverance power as He delivered many people including the mad man of Gadara from satanic bondage, they had encounter with His transforming power on mount of transfiguration as some of them saw him, Elijah and Moses talked together.

He made a lot of promises to them: in Matthew 11:28, he promised them rest. In John 14:27, He promised them peace. In Matthew 16:19, he promised them the keys of the Kingdom. In John 16:33, he promised them victory. In Luke 10:19, he promised them power over all the powers of enemies. In Luke18:30 & Mark 10:30, he promised them reward for serving Him. In John7:37, he promised them the Living water.  In John14:15, he promised them another comforter. In John16:24, he promised them the fullness of Joy, In Matthew 7:7, John 15:16, he promised answered prayers, In Matthew 16:21, he promised them that he will resurrect on the third day.

After His Resurrection; Jesus saw the enthusiasm in them, the eagerness to display their potentials, he saw the rush in them. So he told them: “not to fast… and asked them to wait…”

When Abraham could no longer wait for the promise of God, he slept with Hagar, his wife’s slave (Genesis16:1-5). When the Israelite could no longer wait for Moses, they requested for an idol to serve from Aaron (Exodus 32:1-12).

When Elimelech could no longer wait for divine restoration in Bethlehem, he went to Moab where he jeopardized his Destiny (Ruth1:1-5). When Saul could no longer wait for Samuel, he went ahead to do what he ought not to have done and his kingdom was given to another person (1 Samuel 15:26-28).

Those who wait receive change. “If a man dies, shall he live again? All the days of my appointed time will I wait, till my change come” – Job14:14.

Those who wait have their strength renewed. “But they that wait upon the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint”. – Isaiah 40:31

Those who wait will not be disgraced. “Yea, let none that wait on thee be ashamed: let them be ashamed which transgress without cause”. – Psalm25:3

Those who wait are kept by God. “Let integrity and uprightness preserve me; for I wait on thee”. – Psalm25:21

Those who wait receive their Promises.“And the LORD visited Sarah as he had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as he had spoken”. – Genesis 21:1

What does it take to wait?

To wait requires Trust: it takes total trust in God to be able to wait for his promises. Only a man who trusts God to fulfil what he has said will wait until the fulfillment takes place. – Proverb 3:5-6.

To wait requires Patience: Anyone who really wants to get something from God must be patient. “For if you hope for what you’ve not seen, then do it with patience” – (Romans 8:25). So, to wait for God’s promises, you must be patient and not be in a hurry.

To wait requires Submission: There is no how you can wait for God’s promises when you are ready to submit to him. It takes a man with total submission to the will of God to wait for his promises. To be submissive means to be humble. Therefore, to get anything tangible from God, do it with all humility (1 Peter 5:5, Proverbs 22:4).

To wait requires Service: A waiter is a servant. Your waiting time is a time of service. Serving does not mean to become a slave. Serving God wholeheartedly will always show your level of seriousness before Him (Exodus 30:16).

To wait requires Commitment: It takes a committed person to wait on God’s promises. Give all it takes to walk uprightly before God in order to wipe away all form of inconsistency for fulfillment of His promises.

To wait requires Dedication: Dedication means to sanctify, Holy, to set aside, to make clean etc. which means for anyone to receive something from God, such person must be Holy (Psalm 24:3-5). Exodus 30:29

To wait requires Discipline: Do not be too wise within yourself to the extent of neglecting God’s commandments. Discipline yourself and determine to do that which is right before God (Job 36:10).

To wait requires Prayer and God’s Word: Of course, prayer is the only key to get access to the father (Matthew 21:22), it plays a major role in our relationship with him, without it, there won’t be any means of communication and likewise without the Word of God, there won’t be appropriate knowledge to ask aright (James 4:3). So, at your waiting time, you must wait in prayer.

God’s promises over your life will surely come to pass. He’s not a man that will lie. Whatever he says, he has the ability to carry it out. Although his timing is different from man’s timing and he alone understand the weight of his promises. All you need to do is to wait for the fulfillment of the promises.
